Effect of salbutamol on innervated and denervated rat skeletal muscles

The aim of this study was to establish a 14-day time course study on innervated and denervated rat soleus and tibialis anterior muscles after treatment with salbutamol, a 2 adrenoceptor agonist to assess fiber type selectivity in their type composition. Soleus, as a slow-twitch muscle, is composed of 90% type I fibers and 10% type II fibers. On the other hand, tibialis anterior muscle is fast-twitch with 91, 6% type II fibers and 8, 4% type I fibers. We observed that during the period of denervation occurs the conversion from type I to type II muscle fibers. However, in soleus muscle of the animals which were treated with salbutamol this conversion was less expressed and an increased number of type I fibres were observed. In tibialis anterior muscle, fibres conversion was higher what caused the significant increase in number of type II fibres. Groups of healthy muscles that were treated with salbutamol, showed an increase in number in both muscles of fibres type II until 9th day of experiment. While in soleus the number of fibres type II was increasing towards the end of experiment, in tibialis anterior muscle showed a conversion in second part of experiment from type II fibers to type I. In this study, we have shown how muscles of different properties reacted differently to various stimuli.
