Placenta growth factor in healthy and diabetic mothers and their fetuses
Angiogenesis and vascular transformation are important processes in the normal development of the placenta. Placenta growth factor (PlGF) is a potent angiogenic growth factor and it is important for placental development. Serum samples were collected from (1) 56 healthy pregnant women during pregnancy and umbilical vein at the time of delivery and (2) 123 diabetic pregnant women during pregnancy and umbilical vein at the time of delivery. There was no significant difference between the groups in maternal age or gestational age. PlGF in healthy pregnant women at the time of delivery was lower (194,9ą24,8 pg/mL) than in diabetic women (217,5ą17,4 pg/mL). Significant coefficient correlations between level of PlGF in serum of umbilical vein and newborn weight (r=0,4), placental weight (r=0,6), and erythropoetin (r= -0,3) were found. Fetal umbilical vein serum levels of PlGF correlate with maternal serum levels (r=0,35).
