Central Velebit Mt. section: Permian - Upper Jurassic carbonate succession. Birth of the Dinaric carbonate platform.
The Central Velebit Mt. road Gospić - Karlobag hosts several road-cut exposures which reveal the geological history of the External Dinarides, from Carboniferous to Eocene-Oligocene. The focus of this paper are carbonate successions of Permian and Jurassic age, because of the quality of exposures, and their significance for the interpretation of facies and relative sea-level changes. Permian carbonates are shallow-marine deposits with biogenic buildups interpreted as ecological and morphological reefs, surrounded by shallow lagoons with dominant storm action. The Late Permian succession is represented predominantly with dolomites, and consequently, less studied. The Triassic succession is poorly exposed, and the best exposures on the maritime slope of Velebit are Jurassic platform carbonates. The best exposed are Lower Jurassic limestones with occasional coquinas of Lithiotis bivalves, with numerous subaerial exposures which all document high-frequency sea-level oscillations.
