Creative networks in a post-transitional city

Although the networking in the cultural and creative industries has been the subject of a number of studies, almost nothing is known about networking in the post-transitional social and cultural context. By studying the personal networks of creative professionals, this paper identifies the different types of sociality that are taking place in a post- transitional artistic and creative sector. Personal networks were reconstructed with the help of eight name generators. Data was collected in the form of structured interviews with 168 creative professionals who live and work in Zadar, a medium-size regional center in Croatia. Statistical analysis determined the average values for the size, density and composition of personal networks. The results of analysis show that creative professionals, in order to deal with the uncertainties of the post-transitional creative economy are usually oriented towards smaller, but more reliable circle of friends, associates and family members. As one of the objectives of the study was to identify different types of networks, relevant metric variables were subjected to cluster analysis. Four different clusters were identified.
