Characterization of ZnO Particles Precipitated by using Zinc Acetylacetonate Monohydrate as Precursor
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an important inorganic material which has various applications in traditional, as well as in advanced technologies. The microstructure of ZnO powders or films plays an important role in their applications. Many researchers focused on the preparation of ZnO particles, because it is well-known fact that the properties of ZnO can be changed completely or modified in dependence on the synthesis route. In the present work we focused on the crystallization of ZnO at 160 °C by using zinc acetylacetonate monohydrate as precursor. In the first set of experiments the ZnO precipitation was performed in H2O or mixed H2O/C2H5OH media, whereas in the second set of experiments proper amounts of NH3•aq• solution were additionally added. The crystallization of ZnO was monitored between 2 and 24 h in each case. In dependence on the concentration conditions and the time of aging of the suspensions at 160 °C, different ZnO microstructures were obtained. The mechanism of hollow ZnO particle formation was explained by the aggregation of primary nanoparticles. The samples prepared were characterized with XRD, FE-SEM, EDS and FT-IR.
