Relationship between European corn borer feeding activity and nitrogen leaf content under different agricultural practices
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of two levels of irrigation and nitrogen rates, four maize genotypes and nitrogen leaf content on European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) feeding activity. The experiment was set up in Osijek, Croatia under field conditions during 2012- 2013. Cob mass, number of caterpillars in stem and shank, tunnel length and nitrogen leaf content were evaluated. Two hybrids significantly differed as more tolerant to ECB injury. By raising the level of irrigation, European corn borer feeding activity was reduced while by raising the level of fertilization feeding activity was increased. Nitrogen leaf content was not correlated to ECB feeding activity. These results suggest that good production practices can significantly affect the susceptibility of maize to European corn borer.
