Modeling inter- and intraindividual variability in emotional intelligence measures

The paper deals with the study of development of emotional intelligence (EI) conceptualized within the ability-based model, including the correlates of intraindividual change in its dimensions during early adolescence. The data analyzed here were collected within follow-up study on the sample of 369 elementary school students on three occasions six and 18 months apart, respectively. The applicability of different classes of structural equation models to the study of inter- and intraindividual variations in EI measures will be demonstrated. Following the assumptions of the latent state-trait theory (e.g. Steyer, et al., 1992), the degree to which variations in EI measures are due to individual dispositions and/or to occasion-related factors will be presented. Several single- and multi-construct latent state-trait models were tested against the EI data. According to the parameter estimates obtained, the portions of variance attributable to situational and/or interactional effects varied with the point of measurement and the EI operationalization used. Further, the true change modeling procedures (e.g., Steyer, Eid, and Schwenkmezer, 1997) were also employed to test the hypotheses on the role of personality and cognitive ability measures as antecedents or correlates of interindividual differences in changes on EI measures. The results were compared with those obtained by structural equation analyses specified and done within a 3-wave cross-lagged panel design and tested against the same data sets.
