Marine sediment record of environmental changes in Northern Dalmatia (Croatia) during Holocene
Four long marine sediment cores were analysed from semi-closed bays of catchments along the Middle Eastern Adriatic coast (N. Dalmatia). Changes during last 11000 years in four well defined neighbouring karst catchments using a multiproxy approach. The sediments were dated using 137Cs and 14C. The Zrmanja river catchment is the largest (approximately 1100km2) reflecting regional changes, while the smaller catchments (75 to 170km2) show localized changes. Natural and anthropogenic changes, during the Neolithic and Roman periods, and the Migration period with pronounced erosion due to deforestation, as well as sea-level rise are visible throughout the core records.
