Pediatric surgeon and prenatal counselling: How could we influence the final outcome?
A retrospective audit and analysis of patients with surgically correctable malformations referred to Newborn Treatment Centar over the last 9 years was performed. Two hundred thirty- four newborns were treated ; their 323 congenital anomalies included intraabdominal (43%), thoracic (28%), abdominal wall(18%), genitourinary (9%) and 2% had tumors. Fifteen were diagnosed to have chromosomal abnormalities. Associated anomalies were found in 18, 3% newborns.50% were delivered in tertiary care center, of which 22% were transported in utero, 2, 2% were twin pregnancies, 17% were delivered by caesarean section.50% of newborns were transported during the early neonatal period from regional hospitals. The overall perinatal mortality rate was 27%. A pediatric surgeon's expertise may be invaluable in assisting the obstetrician and the family in planning management of the affected pregnancy, potentially influencing site, mode or timing of delivery.
