EFFECT OF IRRADIATION ON TENSILE PROPERTIES OF MODIFIED POLYPROPYLENES
Polypropylene (PP) is refered to as the most common used polymer material due to its cost effectivness and its properties. The aim of the investigation was to study the changes of mechanical properties in particular tensile properties of polypropylene and PP/talc composites which were subjected to the dose of gamma irradiation, usually used for medical purposes. The samples were prepared by melt-mixing in a Brabender kneading chamber and were compression molded into plates on a laboratory press. The results show that after irradiation PP becomes more stiff and brittle probably due to chain scission, while incoporation of talc additionally increases stiffness of the composite. It should be pointed out that the surface treatment of the filler has no practical effect on tensile properties except on yield stress.
