Variable range hopping conductivity in nanocrystalline films of K0.3MoO3

We report on variable range hopping conductivity (VRH) in granular thin films of K0.3MoO3 (blue bronze, BB) produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Blue bronze is a typical representative of quasi-one dimensional (q-1D) conductors with charge density wave (CDW) collective ground state. Bulk CDW materials are widely investigated and they exhibit many interesting and unusual properties such as: huge dielectric constant, nonlinear conductivity and resonance in GHz frequency region. On the other hand, granular thin films of CDW materials enable investigation of physical properties at meso- and micro scales due to finite- size effects. We analyze the results of resistivity measurements on four selected films exhibiting non-Arrhenius behavior in the temperature range 20 - 300 K within the theory of VRH in granular metals and evaluate if this is appropriate approach. The data for all four films can be fitted to the simple expression for the Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping (ES-VRH), however, with different characteristic parameter T0 below and above the crossover temperature of about 45 K. On the other hand, the fit to the ES-VRH expression with the T-2 pre-exponential factor gives a consistent value of T0=1000 K for all four films up to 100 K while the data above this temperature can be described with activated dependence.
