Approaches to linearization in ICC profiles
In order to assure reproduction accuracy, reproduction processes employ ICC profiles. Among different types of profiles, output profiles use relatively complex transformation model. The profile’s data structures may be used in different ways. One of those are “A” linearization curves which may or may not be used. This study compared performances of standard ISO Coated v2 ECI profile which uses generic “A” curves and the modified profile which employed custom “A” curves. It was found that on a CLUT with 33 grid points accuracy improvement achieved through linearization was negligible. In addition to that, attempts to perform linearization in a way which minimizes the ∆Eab deviations (of values predicted by profiles from actual values) revealed that such condition cannot always be met on some of the CMYK channels.
