Water-soluble organic carbon in aerosols and wet deposition in the urban area of Croatia

The aim of this study was to evaluate atmospheric dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flux in the urban area of Croatia. The study also focuses on the seasonal variability of water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction in atmospheric aerosols. Traces of organics in the atmosphere are efficiently removed by wet precipitations. The atmosferic dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a mixture of organic molecules, defined as the organic matter which passes through a filter of 0.7 μm pore size. In some cases the atmospheric DOC flux may contrubute to the carbon balance of terrestrial ecosystems. Concentrations of DOC have been measured in the wet deposition samples (N=23) collected from March 2011 to January 2013 in the city of Zagreb. WSOC fraction of atmospheric aerosols (PM < 10 μm) were also collected in Zagreb (N = 100) in the period of aproximatelly one year (2010-2011). The average concentration of WSOC was 7.91 μg m-3, with a range from 2.16 μg m-3 to 27.5 μg m-3. The seasonal variation of WSOC concentrations was observed, with the highest concentrations measured in winter (11.60 μg m-3) and the lowest concentrations measured in summer (4.14 μg m-3). The DOC concentration levels in the wet deposition samples (0.31 and 2.66 mg dm-3) with an average value of 1.35 mg dm-3 are similar to those measured in other samples of continental rainwater in the Northern Hemisphere, as reported in the literature. On the other hand, the obtained atmospheric DOC flux mean value of 1.0 g m-2 yr-1, is lower than reported in other similar studies.
