Croatian Foreign Policy towards third countries after EU membership – case studies on Turkey and Caucasus

The main research question is whether Republic of Croatia has formed any foreign policy strategies towards different regions outside EU comfort zone. The aim is to compare policies towards two geographical regions on European borderlands – Caucasus and Turkey. Strategically positioned between Europe and Asia and therefore between numerous influences, at the same time part of European neighborhood and having frozen conflicts, Caucasus is a very specific region. Turkey, on the other hand is strategically interesting both for EU in sense of possible future integration as well as for Croatia in regional sense of influence, past and present ones. Those two regions are mutually interconnected as well trough different initiatives (e.g. BSEC). It could be stated that foreign policies on EU level and on the level of member states were rather different towards regions surrounding EU. The question is what kind of politics Croatia has and will have towards countries in above mentioned region, as well as is it similar to one on the EU level. Methodology consists of two phases of research. First includes analysis of cooperation on bilateral and multilateral level and analysis of cooperation on level of trade and economy. Second phase includes semi- structured interviews of key diplomats and employees of MFA Croatia dealing with area in question. The conceptual framework of research lies upon Lorena Ruano suggestions on upload, download and sideways policy transfers of Europeanization processes.
