Statement on problems of soil protection and sustainable land use in Croatia

Economic recovery and development seem promising for Croatia in the context of the up-to-date concept of sustainable development, based on agriculture and tourism, the two branches of economy that rely on renewable natural resources. This "proecological" orientation means a kind of "alliance" of nature and farming practices. A important pilar of this concept is to introduce management practices in agriculture which will ensure a sustainable and environmentally compatible use of natural resources, especially soil, as conditionally renewable resource. On the same way, basic principles of multifunctionality (MFCAL) and sustainable land management (productivity, stability of yields, natural resources protection, economic efficiency and social acceptability) are absolutely acceptable and usable for Croatia. Creation and use this practices requires research service and activities on one, and high professional knowledge and professional service qualified for giving the instructions to farmers, on the other side. The basic purpose of research work is national resources protection, and soil protection in particular. These research includes at first stage identifying, at the second stage permanent monitoring of degree, types and intensity of soil damages, and at last, a reliable and contemporary soil information system. Only scientific researches, based on exact quantitative data, could give reliable answers on numerous problems of sustainable land management, integrated pest management and plant nutrition system as the basic elements of sustainable agriculture and sustainable development of this part of Europe.
