From waste to value-added products – solid-state fermentation by white-rot fungi
Solid-state fermentation (SSF) has grown into respectable technology in recent years due to its potential applications in different industries for the production of value-added products. Agricultural, food and wood industry are generators of large quantities of lignocellulose waste that pose ecological problems. White-rot fungi can degrade and mineralize all three major lignocellulose polymers (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin), whereas lignin can be degraded extensively resulting in a bleached appearance of degraded wood. This is consequence of white-rot fungi ability to produce a variety of hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes, which also make them particularly useful for application in pulp and paper industry (biopulping, biobleaching) and bioremediation (decolorization of dyes, degradation of xenobiotics). This chapter describes the state-of-art of the application of white-rot fungi in solid-state fermentation processes used for the production of lignolytic enzymes (laccase, lignin- peroxidase and manganese-peroxidase), bioethanol, biogas and other value-added products.
