A proposal for differentiation and terminology of loess parent materials in the continental Croatia

According to the European Loess Map (Haase et al., 2007), loess in the continental Croatia largely consists of loess derivates (LD) and subordinately (in the most eastern part) of brown loess (BL) and typical loess (TL). LD are in-situ diagenetically and pedogenetically altered sediments that are non-calcareous and contain increased clay content. On the General Soil Map of Croatia 1:50.000 (GSM), LD are sometimes labeled as loess, but mostly as Pleistocene loams. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the parent materials of 33 Pseudogley profiles (Pseudogley being the dominant soil type in the continental Croatia, almost exclusively formed on LD) in order to determine if differentiation of loess and Pleistocene loams (sensu GSM) is justified. Considering the color, structure, mechanical composition, porosity and pH, as well as the compositions of the heavy and light mineral fractions of the studied parent materials, no significant differences were generally identified between Pleistocene loams and loess. Since the studied parent materials are thoroughly pedogenetically altered, they were classified as LD and labeled as BtC/g, Ct/g or C/g horizons. Even though on the Đakovo plateau the studied parent materials are less pedogenetically altered, they were not recognized as TL, but BL (since they are non- calcareous, have increased clay content and distinct brown color). Therefore, loess facies in the continental Croatia should be tripartite as TL, LD and BL (with LD being the dominant facies, spreading from the Đakovo plateau to the west).
