English Studies and Liberal Education Today

English studies as a discipline has been subject to a process of continuous transformation since its institutional-disciplinary beginnings at the end of the nineteenth century, a process which has entered a new stage in the past several decades. Namely, this discipline of university research and teaching has become in this period an expansive phenomenon, assimilating discourses and subject matter of other disciplines (primarily in the humanities), and helping create new disciplinary and subdisciplinary fields (usually in the form of various new studies - cultural, media, postcolonial, etc.). This paper suggests that these developments call for intensified reflection on the discipline and its relation to other disciplines and to knowledge in general.
