Preliminary Results Of The Prevalence Caries In SOS-Children’s-Village In Croatia

The aim of the preliminary study was to determine the prevalence of dental caries in children in SOS children's village in Croatia. During the research we examined a total of 45 children (23 girls and 22 boys) aged 7 to 15 years who live in one of the two SOS children’s villages in Croatia. The children were examined in a dental practice using the DIAGNOdent device in the conditions of controlled oral hygiene and with appropriate lighting. The DIAGNOdent device recorded the numerical values of the existence of dental caries in pits and fissures of the premolars (204 teeth) and molars (239 teeth) of the permanent teeth. Also, clinical examination detected the existence of molar incisive hypomineralization (MIH). The analysis of the obtained numerical values of fluorescence of the dental tissue indicated an increased incidence of dental caries on molars (27.61%) compared to the premolars (6.86%). The fixed proportion of first-degree (enamel and dentin caries without lateral extent) in premolars was 5.39% and the second-degree (dentine caries with lateral extent) was 1.47%, while the proportion of first-degree in molars was 14.64% and the second-degree was 12.97%. Clinical examination detected the presence of MIH in 15.56% of the children. In the surveyed group of children the presence of caries was more common on molars compared to premolars, and the existence of MIH was also detected.
