Raman Spectra of Protonated trans-N-Salicylideneaniline
trans-N-Salicylideneaniline (SAN) molecule has drawn attention of molecular spectroscopists in the last few decades primarily because of its specific intramolecular hydrogen bond, as well as its photochromic and thermochromic transformation processes caused by an intramolecular hydrogen transfer. Such a process is prevented by the protonation of the SAN molecule. Isotopically unlabelled and N-15 labelled trans-N-salicylideneaniline isotopomers were protonated by trifluoroacetic acid (CF_3COOH) and deuterium labelled trifluoroacetic acid (CF_3COOD). Their NIR FT Raman spectra have been recorded. Interpretation of the spectra, as well as an assignment of the most important bands gives an insight into the process of protonation, especially in comparison with the corresponding spectra of trans-N-benzylideneaniline and trans-azobenzene.
