Determination of exhaust emissions from the internal combustion engine
One of the most important design features of contemporary internal combustion engines (IC engines) are its exhaust emissions. In every individual area of engine application there is a number of regulations that determine the admissive level of emissions. This paper presents an overview of the EU directive on admissive level of emissions for road motor vehicles. Motor vehicle homologation regulations determine the admissible level of following harmful components: carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matters (PM). In addition, regulations define conditions and methods of measurement and processing of data collected by measurement. Accordingly, this paper gives an overview of the measurement, equipment necessary to conduct tests of exhaust emissions required by the regulatory directives and reveals the method of calculating the measured emission values in order to obtain the value in units that are defined by the directive.
