Youth and History - findings from MYPLACE project Memory, youth, political legacy and civic engagement

The lecture presented main information about research project Memory, Youth, Political Legacy And Civic Engagement (MYPLACE)- a FP7 Euro EC funded project, involving partners in 14 European countries, which explores how young people's social participation is shaped by the shadows (past, present and future) of totalitarianism and populism in Europe. MYPLACE employs a combination of survey, follow up interviews and ethnographic research conducted in 30 selected research locations (within country contrasts in terms of hypothesised receptivity to radical politics ; survey total N = 16, 935, representative samples of young people aged 16-25 in two location per country, interviews total N = 901). In the presentation the selected cross-country survey findings about youth interest for history, perceived importance of commemorating the past, social representations of national history are presented and commented. Despite in general a relatively low interest in history, young people believe it is important to commemorate the country’s past. MYPLACE data about social representations of national history, confirmed World War II, World War I and membership in the European Union as the most important from their countries’ perspectives among the listed events. In the presentation of these data the significant differences between the countries were highlighted which indicates the importance of considering the national and local context in understanding youth relationship to history and memory.
