Self-Promotion and Representation of the Habsburg Dynasty in the Peripheral Regions of the Austrian Empire

The paper will focus on the promotion and self- promotion Habsburg dynasty in the peripheral regions of the Austrian Empire in the period of the early 17th century to the ages of enlightened absolutism, the reign of Maria Theresa and Joseph II. References to the iconography of the 17th and 18th century’s artworks are predominantly considering the significance and the transformation of artistic discourse and the role of patronage in the iconography after the Council of Trent. In that respect artworks are exclusively interpreted on the topic of their role of propaganda fide, while some other aspects of artworks are often overlooked, especially in the sphere of self- promotion. Theme of patronage as an instrument of self-promotion and the church space as a testing ground to promote the status, origin and credo of prelates, high nobility and wealthy citizens, partly involves redefining sacred space as the exclusive place of spirituality, and its reinterpretation in terms of self-promotion of donors. As the most common instrument of self-promotion in the sacral area stand out their emblems, exposing their socio- political position in the society of the time and their role in a particular environment. In Northern Croatia, the historical margin of the Austrian monarchy, the rule of Maria Theresa and Joseph II left tangible traces in the newly built churches and the donated inventory (altarpieces, liturgical vessels and clothes) by which they emphasized their dominance, shaping in the same time cultural and visual identity of the Croatian historical space between the 1740ies and 1780ies.
