The War of Cyprus (1570-1573) in Dalmatia: a Struggle for the Naval Route
For Venice Dalmatia was not as important as its Greek possessions, but nevertheless vital as a part of the naval route to the Levant. The eastern Adriatic coast was much more favourable for naval activities than the western one, because of its anchoring and sheltering possibilities. So the Venetians struggled to maintain this route (among other things, by investing huge sums in modern fortifications), while the Ottomans performed pressure from the hinterland. By the end of the War of Cyprus, in 1573, the Venetian territory in Dalmatia reached its historically smallest extent, comprising more or less only the coastal towns with their valuable ports.
