New public spaces as an incentive for rehabilitation - Case Study Island of Vir

The Urban planning workshop 2 – Town planning (academic year 2012-2013) entitled Research, transformation and reconstruction of the Island of Vir was conceived in the context of socially responsible theme – future rehabilitation of the areas where legalization of illegal buildings recently took place. The Workshop had to encourage discussion on rehabilitation scenarios of illegally built areas of the Island of Vir and consideration on long-term sustainable spatial development of the entire island. The aim of the Workshop was to examine and identify problems and development potentials, as well as to make development concepts of the whole island and their specific areas, with the emphasis on the design and implementation of new public spaces as elements of rehabilitation. Students in their projects proposed scenarios of long-term comprehensive development of the Island of Vir and various scenarios of rehabilitation in order to improve the quality of life for local inhabitants and to provide additional offer for tourists. Their goal was affirmation of the characteristics of the island and exploration of potentials, creation of recognizability and enabling sustainable development in the future, whereas special emphasis was placed on the implementation of various new public spaces in the built structure and undeveloped parts of the island. Selected student works were presented at exhibitions in Vir, Zadar and Zagreb, and published in a book Research, Transformation and Reconstruction of the Island of Vir. The entire project was presented at the Congress of Croatian Architects in Osijek in 2013 where the exhibition of the student works took place as well as promotion of the book. In 2014 the project was given special recognition within the first conference ARTUR Architecture and Tourism in the category professional research and publications.
