Effect of Fertilization on the Mineral Composition of Roots and Leaves of Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas)
Sweet potato is a perennial tropical species that according to the breeding area is one of the seven most important crops in the world. It belongs to vegetables rich in dietary fibre, minerals and vitamins that are important for human nutrition. Given the increased interest in the production of sweet potato, the need for research on the effects of increasing fertilization on the mineral composition became crucial. The research and setting up the experiment was conducted on the demonstrational experimental field in Varaždin within two years by setting identical two factorial field experiments in randomized complete block design with four replications. The first factor was the variety in two stages, while the second is the level of nitrogen and potassium fertilization in three stages (N:K 1:1, 1:2.5 and 1:5). Planting was done in the middle of May by setting 2 plants per m2. At the end of the growing season, the analysis of leaf and root was conducted, and the percentage of N, P and K was determined based on the dry matter. The percentage of nitrogen in the root ranged from 1.37 to 1.83%, while in the leaf from 2.65 to 3.73%.The percentage of phosphorus in the root ranged from 0.15 to 0.28%, and in the leaf from 0.21 to 0.34%. Percentage of potassium in the root ranged from 1.18 to 2.34, and in the leaf from 1.88 to 3.68%. Based on the results obtained, a positive correlation was found between the rising fertilization and the mineral composition of roots and leaves of sweet potato.
