Need for Brief Cognitive Assessment in ~ Schizophrenia
Cognitive symptoms 01schizophrenia are under great scientific attention as they are thought to be major predictors of functional deficits in this illness. Methods for assessment of the cognitive functions are mainly in the domain of clinical neuropsychology. Neuropsychological tests of the cognitive functions are very specific, expensive, time-consuming and not always available. Today the demand for brief, easy interpretable, user friendly test, with high intrinsic values, comparable to present cognitive test batteries, is widely recognized. In clinical situation, as well as for research purposes, there is no commonly used screening tool for assessment of cognitive functions of the patients with schizophrenia. Characteristics of such assessment instrument will be proposed, based on clinical observation and literature. Assessment of patient's cognitive functions should be obligatory in the assessment of patient's competency to give any informed consent.
