Rhythm of the island: crises, migration and the reshaping of identity on the Dalmatian island of Olib

In this paper the authors confront two phenomena: crises and migration processes as its outcome on the north Dalmatian island of Olib. Since the island's present and the past is marked by emigration, the authors place an emphasis on the migration history conditioned by crises periods, as well as on return migration trend among the senior population that has decided to spend their retirement days on the island. Emphasizing the migration history that marked the islander's identity, authors will point out to various periods of crises that generated migration as its outcome. Based on a several field research conducted on the island of Olib, authors examine from the anthropological point of view various cultural practices that emerge as a result of coping with crises and migration - return migration trend, reshaping of local dialect, syncretism of American and Dalmatian life styles, reinterpretation of the images of the past, etc. The contemporary reshaping of the island is analyzed within the framework of relationships among local inhabitants, returnees from United States, Bosnian refugees that have made Olib their home in the after war period and others who consider Olib their home. By contrasting various imagery and memories of the island's past with contemporary usages and perceptions of the island present, we are pointing to the creation of new identity of Olib. As the result of crises periods and emigration as its outcome, Olib nowdays is marked by coexistence of two trends: on the one hand, the urgency of changing the "island that sinks", which is a reference to the aging of the island population, and, on the other, "the island fjaka" (an idle state of mind and body), which defers the apocalyptic view of the island's future.
