The Plastic Forming of Thin Walled Profiles From a Strip
The forming of thin-walled profiles is based on gradual material forming in the form of strip by passing it between a series of rotary rolls. In the process of profiles forming elastic-plastic strains emerge in the three mutually orthogonal directions, in the vertical, horizontal and longitudinal direction. Vertical strains are useful because they determine profile form. Longitudinal strains are harmful because they influence geometrical form and profiles quality, and increase complexity of defining process. Geometrical form of profiles and dimensions are especially significant at profiles making of special shape where high degree of accuracy is requested. The basic influential parameter of geometry and profiles quality is tool, that is: calibrating, accuracy of making and tool adjusting, angle increment of bending, material and quality of tool surface machining, the number of forming phases and tribology-friction of tool contact by strip. The paper gives a survey of the classification profiles making procedures, profiles geometry, forming technology, state of stress, experimental results, modeling of forming force and examples of profiles phased forming. Technology of profile phased forming is shown by two examples of forming with the aid of MECHANICAL DESKTOP program, where the drawing of final profile is a starting point for determining of phases and profiles forming procedure. Procedure of cold forming of thin-walled profiles, in comparison with the other procedures of profiles making, has techno-economic advantages in spite of considerable investments in tools.
