New data on the tectonics of the Dinarids on the basis of the profile Senj-Ogulin (Croatia)

Twelve lithostratigraphic units of the stratigraphic range from the Middle Liassic to Albian have been defined on the 45 km long profile Senj-Ogulin, oriented perpendicular to the Dinaric structures. The thickness of the investigated deposits is approximately 5000 m. Defined stratigraphic succession enabled detailed mapping along the profile, and division of the investigated profile into 6 structural units, bounded by important reversed faults (characterized by considerable vertical displacements, often more than 1000 m). Most of them, except those bounding backward structures, are of the southwestern vergence, indicating the southwest direction of the tectonic transport. These faults are characterized by very steep fault planes, indicating probable reactivation of inherited structures in the base of the carbonate complex. The reactivation was a consequence of tectonic activity during the Tertiary, when the region was affected by the SW-NE oriented contraction. The fault planes are mostly carstified and weathered, with infrequent traces of primary movements, which are usually overprinted by the Neotectonic striation. Although the effects of the Neotectonic activity are common on all defined discontinuities, their character indicate only minor amounts of displacement.Besides the structures of the typical Dinaric strike (NW-SE), large structures of N-S strike have been determined. Since there are no evidences of the subsequent rotation, N-S oriented structures are probably the consequence of the syngenetical bending of the structures due to the local deviation of the regional stress during the Tertiary tectonic cycle.
