Ðakovo is the bishop's seat since the early Middle Ages. The bishops moved to Ðakovo from Bosnia. In the area of Srijem, the diocese has existed since the time the Church has started its activities, and its firs headquarters was originally in Srijemska Mitrovica. Until the arrival of the Turks in the region between the rivers of Drava, Danube and Sava, both the diocese existed independently (Srijem diocese with an interruption). During the Ottoman rule, the dioceses and their management did not exist. After the departure of the Turks from the area between the Danube, the Drava and the Sava, in the late 17th century, both dioceses were again established. The ruler Maria Theresa and Pope Clement XIV. decided to unite both dioceses canonically in 1773 in a diocese which carried the name "Bosnia or Đakovo and Srijem Diocese“, and its headquarters was in Ðakovo. That diocese existed until 2008, when it was raised to the level of the archdiocese, and in 1963 it changed its name to"Diocese of Đakovo or Bosnia and Srijem". During its existence, from 1773 to 2008, the united diocese based in Ðakovo has changed its borders and it was ruled by bishops and their deputies, and the diocese changed the scope of their activity. During its existence, from 1773 to 2008 the diocese was administrated by 11 bishops. The bishops of the diocese managed with the help and advice of the diocesan council of administration (consistory), which consisted of priests, the bishop's closest associates (they were mostly canons - members of the body of canons). In the administration of the diocese with the bishop and active members of the council participated numerous officials who did not actively take part in decision-making relevant to the administration of the diocese, but held jobs which were wery important for the effective management of the diocese. The central diocesan administration in Ðakovo created a large amount of written heritage - various books of records, documents of which each period had its uniqueness and ways of written material. Today the material developed by central diocesan administration in Ðakovo is of great importance for understanding of the history of the diocese (which has not been fully explored and published), for the insight in the history of the eastern Croatian and Srijem, development of education, culture, art, politics, economics and other areas of activity from the territory over which the diocese based in Ðakovo had jurisdiction. This study shows range of activities of the central diocesan administration in Ðakovo, list of persons who participated in the administration of the diocese in the period from 1773 to 2008, as well as the written heritage that was formed by the central diocesan administration in Ðakovo. As a result of the survey all the personel who worked at Đakovo diocesan administration was listed for the first, as well as the material (written heritage) which was written by the administration. It explains the method and scope of work of administration, with all its peculiarities of each period of extance of administration in Ðakovo. However, based on the existing written heritage, there is still plenty of room for additional research, especially because all the written heritage of central diocesan administration in Ðakovo was not arranged according to archival standards by the time this work has finished.
