Development of SHCC with biomass fly ash
Wood biomass is considered as a carbon neutral fuel as it absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide while growing as released by burning it. For that reason, combustion of biomass for electricity production is increasing worldwide and consequently the amount of fly ash derived from biomass combustion is also increasing. The fly ash disposal causes financial and environmental burden so there is an increasing interest to find novel applications for ash utilization. This paper proposes the use of biomass fly ash from wood and peat combustion as key component in Strain-Hardening Cement-Based Composites (SHCC). This paper includes a comparative analysis of a SHCC with coal fly ash and limestone powder and a SHCC with biomass fly ash and limestone powder. All materials exhibit high compressive strength, high ductility under bending stress and tight crack width control. The biomass SHCC has higher early-age compressive and flexural strength. Drying shrinkage measurements were also conducted. The durability of both materials was studied by means of freeze-and-thaw cycling, wet-and-dry cycling and 80ºC water baths as an accelerated-ageing condition.
