Phytoplankton and phytobenthos as biological quality elements along karstic river

Phytoplankton (potamoplankton), same as phytobenthos, is the biological element required for monitoring in rivers. Usually in rivers investigations are mainly restricted to either the upper or to the middle section. Longitudinal investigations along the river, such as this one along the River Lika, are rare and therefore even more valuable. Concerning phytoplankton, monitoring systems are traditionally based on phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll a. In such systems researchers use species or genus level data that result in taxonomical list. As an alternative in ecology and river quality management is method of grouping phytoplankton in functional groups (FG) and their comparison in water quality assessments. In Europe, Hungarian HRPI index is based on the functional classification but it requires previously produced regression models for normalization of index and chlorophyll a concentration. There are no previous data on phytoplankton in River Lika and in this investigation we used Qr index as potentially best assemblage index for further comparison with phytobenthos community. The main objectives in this investigation are to provide longitudinal description of potamoplankton functional groups and comparison with benthic diatom composition along karstic river Lika on two instances. Actual estimation of ecological state of the river is based on phytoplankton Qr index and benthic Croatian Trophic Diatom Index. Additionally, special attention was paid to the diatoms in the plankton and benthos which represent specific descriptors of this particular karstic ecosystem. Sampling was conducted on seven different points in May and August 2014. A total of 45 species contributed more than 2% to the total phytoplankton biomass and presented 17 FG. Qr index indicates bad to moderate (0.41-0.81) water quality. A total of 122 species was recorded in benthic samples. The most frequent species were Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki (17 samples) and Fragilaria capucina Desmazières (16 samples) while 65 species was present in only one sample. Trophic Diatom Index was in the range from 1.7 to 2.5 indicating good to moderate conditions. Lower values were noted in May in plankton, and especially in epilithic samples, while higher values correspond to samples in August. As expected, Croatian Trophic Diatom Index generated acceptable values for investigated area owing to fact it is developed on Croatian species and data. Disagreements of Qr index and Croatian Trophic Index highlighted the need to normalise the assessment values.
