Validity and reliability of the Croatian version of the Child Perception Questionnaire 11-14

Aim: Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ) was designed in Canada to measure the oral health-related quality of life in children and the goal of this study was to translate and validate the instrument in Croatia. Materials and methods: The sample consisted of 140 children (60% girls) aged 11-14 years who seeked orthodonic treatment at Dental Clinics in Rijeka and Zagreb. Intraoral examination comprised Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need Dental Health Component (IOTN DHC). Results: Explanatory factor analysis indicated the use of two instead of four original dimensions in Croatia: psychosocial well-being (PW ; includes original dimensions, emotional and social well-being and accounts for 28.3 % of variance) and oral function (OF, includes oral symptoms and functional limitations ; 18% of variance). Dimensions have good internal consistency (Cronbach α=0.901 and 0.761 for PW and OF). Convergent validity indicates that PW and OF measure the construct similar to impact of oral health on well-being (r=0.570 and 0.326 ; p<0.05). PW significantly correlates with satisfaction with teeth appearance (0.414), self-perceived orthodontic treatment need (0.410) and the demand for treatment (0.383). OF significantly correlates solely with the self-perceived treatment need (r=0.252). Discriminant validity shows that PW is capable of distinguishing people with mild and severe malocclusion (cut off IOTN DHC≥3) (1.7±3.1 vs. 4.8±6.1, p<0.001), but OF cannot. In the responsiveness testing PW can detect reduction of overjet due to treatment with functional orthodontic appliances (p=0.022), however OF cannot. Conclusion: The Croatian version of the CPQ has satisfactory psychometric properties and is thus applicable for children in Croatia.
