Diode lasers in soft tissue oral surgery

Diode lasers have a diversity of applications in the medical field. Small and compact, they can be „stacked“ to produce considerable output powers. The active material is a semi- conducting crystal, usually gallium arsenide (GaAs) or similar compounds. The precise wavelenght depends upon the material used in the semiconductor layers. The beam from the diode laser is usually more divergent than that of the other lasers, requiring additional optics to produce a collimated output beam. Beams can be in continuous wave or pulsed. The advantage of diode systems is their compactness, high efficiency and reliability. Some lasers devices use low power visible diode lasers in place of helium-neon (HeNe) lasers for aiming beams. To understand the use of laser surgery, it is necessary to know the fundamental principles of laser light. In some specific clinical cases we still do need the help from soe of the more conventional techniques to complete the soft tissue intraoral surgical procedures. The best choice and clinical supplement for laser surgery is high frequency. Practitioners should be satisfied that novel clinical approaches have a sound scientific basis, and are not adopted solely just on the basis of anecdotal reports or incomplete researches. Despite the enthusiastic acceptance oft his technology by professionals and the public, further researches, including controlled clinical studies, to investigate the higher efficacy, as well as the other side effects of laser therapy, is still needed.
