Introduction
This edited volume uses various approaches under the broad umbrella of critical theory to explore social, pedagogical and epistemological challenges pertaining to the contemporary encounter between human learning and digital networks. This, introductory chapter for the volume, briefly explains its historical and theoretical background, and defines networked learning as a research paradigm based on the marriage between an abstract model of the network and critical theory. It describes design and development of this edited volume, briefly introduces all chapters, summarizes their conclusions, and places them in relation to each other. It situates the volume within the tradition of critical pedagogy, and locates it into the area of critical praxis aimed at social transformation. Finally, it shows that contributions to this volume can be interpreted at two main levels: they develop critical perspectives to various specific problems within the field of networked learning, and link the developed perspectives to the broad relationships between human learning and digital networks.
