The Sources of Firm Aptitude

Aptitudes are natural, unlearned abilities. They are component of a competency to do a certain kind of work at a certain level, which can be considered as talent. Aptitudes may be physical or mental, and are not developed knowledge, understanding, learned or acquired abilities, skills or attitudes: they spring from heredity or endowments. Aptitude and intelligence are related views of assessing human mental ability, when aligned to the theory of multiple intelligences. It is been considered that the individual, who knows his own aptitudes, and their relative strengths, chooses more intelligently among the available opportunities, thus aptitudes have an important impact on motivation to act. In order to elevate the understanding of the managerial and organizational mind as well as cognitive and emotional processes in strategic decision making, we delve into the psychology of strategic management, through the dynamic capabilities view. Since the individual ability or performance is the result of complex interaction between various parts of the mind-body system, we aim to bond the cognitive abilities measured by aptitude assessments, in particular situational and rational, by drawing on the behavioral microfountations of dynamic capabilities in order to sculpt the unique character and strategic posture of the firm. Moreover, we highlight the aptitude drivers embedded it the firm’s intangible resource base, in particular organizational identity, to addresses it’s interrelatedness with capabilities, reputation and strategy. We conceptualize how these intangibles affect the sensemaking in organizations, aiming to gain positions of prominence, and so becoming able to influence the business “rules of the game”.
