Jutarnjost-večernjost i karakteristike spavanja smjenskih radnika
Morningness-eveningness refers to phase differences in circadian rhythms of alertness, performance and some physiological functions, as well as differences in time preferences and habits in performing various activities during a 24-hour period. Some shiftwork studies have suggested that morningness-eveningness may moderate differences in tolerance to shiftwork. As sleep characteristics are the main indices of shiftwork tolerance it could be expected that morning- and evening-type shiftworkers differ in characteristics of their sleep. Thus this study examined relationships between morningness-eveningness and sleep quality and duration on various days within a shiftwork cycle. The study was conducted with a group of 604 workers of heterogeneous age working in a rapid rotating shift system. The results showed that evening "types" in comparison to morning "types" slept shorter on days of the morning shift, but longer on days of the nigh- and afternoon shift, and days off. In addition, it was shown that older workers were more morning "types" in comparison to younger workers. In comparison to younger workers they slept longer on morning shift days, and shorter on night- and afternoon shift days, and days off. When the effect of age on the obtained results was statistically held constant, the relationships between sleep duration and morningness-eveningness were similar as when the effect of age was not controlled. Sleep quality was better in evening-type workers than in morning-type workers. However, morningness-eveningness and sleep quality were not related when the effect of age on the obtained results was controlled. The results of this study suggest that evening "types" generally tolerate shift work better than morning "types", although the morning "types" sleep longer on the days of the morning shift.
