SYNTHESIS OF CARBAZOLE GUANIDINES, NOVEL ANION RECEPTORS

Preparation of new anion receptors is an extensive research field of supramolecular chemistry due to the ubiquitous presence of anions in living organisms and in the environment.[1] Substituted carbazole derivatives proved to be especially interesting receptors since they can form complexes of different colours which enables easier detection and differentiation of anions. Examples of such compounds include carbazole-based urea derivatives which bind anions by forming hydrogen bonds between anions and the NH groups of carbazole and urea.[2] The main goal of our current research is the synthesis of 1, 8-bisguanidylcarbazoles I having various substituents on positions 3 and 6 of the carbazole moiety (R = Cl, Br, I, CN, OMe, alkyl, etc.). Variation of substituents on the aromatic rings changes the acidity of NH protons of the receptor, which in turn effects its ability to form hydrogen bonds.
