Biological Treatment of Agricultural and Food Industry Waste by White-Rot Fungi – Opportunities and Challenges
Agricultural and food industry are generators of large quantities of lignocellulose waste. White-rot fungi are unique organisms showing the capacities of degrading and mineralizing all three major lignocellulose polymers (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin) due to their ability to produce a variety of hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes. Prior to apply the white-rot fungi in lignocellulose waste treatment for enzyme or biofuels production, the knowledge on microorganism's kinetic growth, substrate utilization, complex material composition measurements and the biodegradation process optimization is beneficial. The results on laccase production during Trametes versicolor submerge cultivation using various industrial wastes as laccase inducers and laccase use in phenolic compounds oxidation in classical reactors and in microreactors will be presented. An overview of the application of different white-rot fungi in solid-state fermentation processes using various lignocellulose materials as substrates will be given resulting with the work on process development of corn stover biological pretreatment with Trametes versicolor for its further use in anaerobic co-digestion with cow manure for biogas production.
