Music connections of Antoniana with the eastern Adriatic coast

The paper will treat the presence of the Antoniana composers in the musical archives and collections along the eastern Adriatic coast, as well as – more in details – the life and work of Giuseppe Michele Stratico, the most prominent Dalmatian composer whose activities can be brought into connection with the Antoniana during the 17-18th centuries period. The Antoniana composers at the eastern Adriatic coast are mostly preserved in the collections of the north-Adriatic town of Cres (Cherso) and the south-Adriatic town of Dubrovnik (Ragusa). Among them are Francesco Antonio Vallotti and later composers such as Luigi Marsand, Melchiore Balbi, Alessandro Capanna, Luigi Antonio Sabbatini, along with some other minor authors such as, for example, a certain Pietro di Padova. Their works (exclusively in manuscript form) make part of music collections kept in Franciscan monasteries, parish churches and secular historical archives. Giuseppe Michele Stratico (Zadar, 1728 – Sanguinetto, 1783) belongs to the noble Stratico family from Zadar (of Greek origins in the masculine part). He was only nine when he came to Padua and started studying law at the Paduan University (1737-45). He complemented his legalistic activities with the musical ones – as a composer, violinist and music theorist. Stratico’s teacher in violin and composition was Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770) whose influence on Stratico is obvious both in his compositional and theoretical work. According to a some contemporary records, Stratico played violin in Basilica and was noticed as a very skillful player. A considerable number of Stratico’s compositions has been preserved at the University of California in Berkeley (USA), but several dozens of them are also scattered around in Paduan Basilica archives, Venice, Verona, Berlin, Washington, Modena – a total of more than 300 compositions in all. Being no innovator as a composer, Stratico used the usual style of his time, demonstrating nevertheless excellence and skillfullness in compositional techniques within Tartini’s circle. From 1760 Stratico moved to Sanguinetto where he was vicario e giudice al maleficio, where he passed away in 1783.
