J. W. Gregory's contribution to Quaternary geology of Croatia, and some of his dilemmas solved

Gregory's research in Dalmatia, and his 1913 and 1915 publications are unduly forgotten seminal works which provide excellent historical insight into the stage of the art in the early XX century, and his claims and interpretations should be reinterpreted in the light of recent geological and geomorphological reasoning and knowledge. Gregory listed six geomorphological features which are, at higher latitudes, diagnostic of glacial origin, but admited that in Dalmatia these originated by different processes. His dilemma concerning (pseudo)glacial origin of some landforms can be solved now in the light of new evidence. Herein, we present 14 features which document glaciation of the eastern Adriatic coast ; 1) trough valleys, 2) exotic drifts, 3) striated blocks, 4) erratic blocks, 5) moraine ridges, 6) moraine hummocks, 7) kame terraces, 8) ice wedge casts, 9) lacustrine sediments with dropstones, 10) glaciotectonic features, 11) sandur, 12) moutonated rocks, 13) hanging valleys, and 14) glacioisostatic uplift. These evidence come from low altitude locations, as well as locations at the modern sea level, and some imply that the ice had to descent to even lower altitudes. The described glacial features imply that the NE Adriatic coast was affected by a strong glacial advance during Middle Pleistocene. This observation is consistent with recent knowledge on glacial history of the Mediterranean region.
