Comics and contemporary literary education in junior grades of primary school

One of the fundamental goals of literary instruction is educating the reading audience capable of aesthetic communication with a literary work. Due to the fact that communicatin by pictures can greatly help children's comprehension of a comic, it, as a popular media can facilitate teachers' task in developing younger pupils' literacy. The correlation between art and literature enlarges children's capability for understanding the world around them. The authors of the text have done a research on the position of comics in Croatia, in relation to assigned required reading in early grades of primary school. The total of 454 second, third and fourth grade pupils participated in the research, out of which 225 were girls and 229 boys. The given results confirmed that pupils in the first four primary grades prefer comics to required reading which creates new possibilities in approaching the interpretation of literary texts. As regards early primary grades, a comic is applicable in various types and different phases of a literature class.
