Grain size analysis of calcareous marine and estuarine sediments using conventional methods and digital granulometries

This paper examines granulometric characteristics and grain shapes of calcareous sediments from different locations in Adriatic Sea (Croatia and Italy). Granulometric parameters are calculated using both graphic method and the method of moments. Depending on the moment features, sediments are then classified as sand, silty sand, sand-silt and sandy silt type. Digital image processing methods using granulometries was attempted on these calcareous sediments. Mathematical granulometries are powerful shape descriptors, successful used in classification, segmentation and shape estimation in digital images. Sediments contain variety of shapes and structures, description and quantification of these shapes makes mathematical granulometries an ideal candidate in digital domain. Sediment sieving processes are analogous to the mathematical granulometric, mathematical extension of granulometries to sediment sieving process has been derived and both these methods compared using modeled digital grains [Y.Balagurunathan et.al, J of Image Anal. & Stereology, July 2001]. Calcarious sediments were imaged using microscopic lens; digital sieving was carried out using the granulometric extensions on these grains. Conventional moment descriptors and image-based granulometric moments were compared, these show close comparison to each other. Digital granulometries can truly be the future alternative to conventional sediment sieving.
