Women and Property in Medieval Slavonian Towns
This article focuses on women’s property rights over real estate, analyzing the ways in which they could acquire it (by inheritance, donation, dowry, purchase, or exchange) and in which they could participate in the corresponding transactions. Special attention is dedicated to the ways women disposed with real estate in their testaments, as well as to donations they made during their lifetime. Additional relevant topics include the relationship between the personal property of a woman and the common property of husband and wife, as well as the role of women in lawsuits concerning property, as well as their rights and duties as tutors of minors and their property.
