A Corpus-based Linguistic Analysis of Errors in Final Paper Abstracts

Writing is one of the most challenging skills in second language learning requiring intensive, long and specialised instruction. Errors inevitably occur affecting both form and communication. This paper aims at studying typical errors students make in their final paper abstracts written in English. The research corpus consists of 110 final paper abstracts written by the professional study programme undergraduate students from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Osijek. The final paper abstracts were selected randomly and downloaded from the official repository. The abstracts were analysed using Markin 3.1 software speeding up the process of error classification and providing overall descriptive statistics of the errors. The errors were classified into 21 categories. The conducted analysis shows that students frequently omit or misuse articles due to their non-existence in their native language. Furthermore, the analysis shows the omission or misuse of pronouns frequently resulting in using vague references. In addition, word choice is rather poor and word order often incorrect. Also, there is a lack of agreement between a subject and a verb that is occasionally used in both incorrect form and tense. Finally, contrary to our expectations, misspelling and quotation errors, otherwise underlined and suggested for correction by Microsoft Office Word students use to write their final papers, were recorded at a very high rate.
