Prorocentrum minimum (Dinophyceae) in the Adriatic and Black Sea
During the summer months 1983 Prorocentrum minimum (Pa villard) Schiller, not earlier recorded from ther Adriatic, constitued a considerable proportion of the regular summer bloom in the Šibenik Bay (eastern Adriatic coast). During the subsequent years (1984, 1985, 1986) the proportions of P. minimum in summer blooms in the Šibenik Bay was constantly increasing. At the same time its presence was reported from the other parts of the Adriatic coast, attributed to the intensified eutrophication of the Adriatic waters. A number of papers reported frequent summer blooms in the Black Sea, the main cause of which was held to be Exuviaella cordata Ostenfeld. These blooms were due to progressive eutrophication of the Black Sea during the seventies and eighties of this century. A comparison of the E. cordata samples collected during summer blooms (June 1986) from the Black Sea with the P. minimum (July 1986) from the Šibenik Bay (Adriatic Sea)made us think it likely that these were the same organisms, that is the species P. minimum (Pavillard) Schiller.
