Short-term high salt diet impairs microvascular endothelial function in young healthy salt- resistant women
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether short term high salt (HS) diet impairs microvascular reactivity independently of changes in blood pressure (BP) by affecting its endothelial fuction. Methods: 10 healthy women took a 7-days low-salt (LS) diet (<40mmol Na/day) and 7-days HS diet (~240mmol of Na/day). Salt resistance was confirmed in all subjects. Cutaneous microvascular blood flow was measured by Laser Doppler Flowmetry in response to vascular occlusion (post occlusive reactive hyperemia- PORH) and in response to iontophoresis of acetylcholine (ACh) (endothelium dependent vasodilation) before and after diet protocols. Plasma Renin Activity (PRA), plasma aldosterone and 24hurine sodium levels were measured before and after diets. Results: Changes in 24h urinary sodium, PRA and plasma aldosterone levels confirmed subjects conformed to the diet. There was no change in BP and HR before and after diet protocols. HS diet caused significant impairment in microvascular reactivity (PORH) (R-O LS diet 142±29% vs. HS diet 97±12%, P=0.033) and impairment in ACh induced dilation (ACh LS diet 1656±414% vs. HS diet 1045±254%, P=0.025). Conclusions: The results of this study confirmed our previous finding that short-term HS intake impairs microvascular reactivity independently of changes in BP in young healthy women, but now indicating that HS intake directly affects endothelium function in microciruculation.
