The Perception of the Rural Area of Plitvice Lakes National Park Through Selected

Imagology, the study of comparative literature, has enabled scientists to thoroughly analyze possible images regarding countries and people. Although imagological constructs can be quite distant from reality, when combined with other methods from other scientific fields, especially history and ethnology, but also sociology and psychology, one has the possibility to recognize the real situation at the certain area and/or in the certain society or local community, with the latter as the subject of this paper. With the help of interpretative sociology and document analysis, that is documentary research, this paper will try to present the perception of the area of today’s Plitvice Lakes National Park during the time of the Habsburg Monarchy and subsequent Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Precisely, this paper takes into consideration the time of the Military Border abandonment, as well as the breakthrough of new civic and capitalist attitudes. Archival material in the form of itineraries has been analyzed with the help of historical and sociological perspectives. It is necessary to emphasize that during the 19th century the area of Plitvice Lakes was a territory in which most people had some military functions, which led to the neglect of natural beauties of this area. This means that local communities as well were compelled to be engaged primarily in military tasks. Satisfaction of other socioeconomic and socio- cultural needs was of lesser importance. This leads us to the conclusion that the military function of today’s Plitvice Lakes National Park has been the main factor that led to a negative perception of the local communities, seen by foreign as well as Croatian itinerary writers. That confirms the basic hypothesis of this paper – despite natural and tourist potential of this area, the military regime caused a negative perception of the inhabited rural areas and local communities in the area of Plitvice Lakes.
