Gridded station temperature data for validation of the climate models present climate

“Climate of the Adriatic Region in its global context “, CARE, is the research project approved by Croatian Science Foundation for the forthcoming four years. It brings together a majority of researchers involved in the study of climate-related physical processes in Croatia. The proposed project is designed as a comprehensive study of the climate of the Adriatic region, covering processes in the atmosphere and the ocean and their interaction. The project is based on observational data as well as on modelling of the past and projection of the future climate over an area where the large-scale circulation patterns are under strong influence of the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea. The statistical analysis of station data, that gives a rather limited information on the climate of the area surrounding the station will be expanded by geostatistical analysis and mapping. This will enable an assessment of temporal and spatial characteristics of the climate system in the area of interest. These gridded data will be compared to available similar global European data sets and will be used as the reference data for validation of the Regional Climate Model simulations in reproducing the observed climate. Such an approach not only emphasises the importance of the ground-based or remote-sensed observations but also promotes climate models as the main tools in assessing the current and future climate conditions in the Adriatic area. Preliminary results on spatial and spatio-temporal regression kriging of the monthly temperature and precipitation data will be presented.
